Oscars!

Academy Awards Noms are out. I'm pretty excited to see Atonement up for best picture. It was beautiful and had the same sort of emotional pull that the English Patient did. Cate Blanchett is up for Best Actress AND Best Supporting Actress. Also of note, Saoirse Ronan (from Atonment) got a Best Supporting Actress nod.
I really hope there is a show this year. There is something very satisfying about printing out the nomination list and checking off the winners one by one. Besides, if there isn't a show then there aren't crazy acceptance speeches to talk about the next day.

Living in Ikea?

Mark Malkoff is living in IKEA for a week while his apartment is being fumigated. Crazy. He's providing a video/day while he stays there. My favorite line is in the prologue, "My apartment is 80% Ikea anyway, so it will be just like staying at home." Our place is also an IKEA commercial. Actually now that I think about it, I just got a new island/kitchen cart from IKEA... is it possible to be addicted to purchasing furniture?

On the Interview Trail

Well interviews have started and tomorrow I'll be on #4 out of 9. Luckily, three are in-town. But, that still leaves me with plenty of plane tickets to buy. Ugh. They keep telling us that we're interviewing them, not the other way around. However, I think they lie. ;) Well, in any case, the actual interview days are pretty nice. We have dinner the night before and then the day itself has an interview (or two or three or four), info sessions, tours, meetings with residents, etc.

Everyone keeps saying that ultimately it's about your gut instinct. So, hopefully after I'm done with all these interviews, my gut will have something to say.

Between interviews, wedding planning, and extracurriculars, life certainly is busy!

And the breaks get longer and longer...

between posts. The update: I've decided to apply to an internal medicine residency. My part of the app is done. So, now I'm playing the waiting game. I'm actually really excited about interviews. It'll be nice to go look at some different places. I've got some ideas about what I'm looking for in a program. But, we'll see. It's a weird feeling to have no idea where you'll be living come July and that you won't know until Mid-March. For all the type A personalities in medicine, that's a long period of uncertainty.

Beginnings of a Sub I

Holy crap it's hard. It's only the end of the second day, but I am now acutely aware of how much more I need to learn. Hopefully this month will be great. Sadly though, there can be no Monday night eating marathons since I'm on call every M and F in June. I'm actually post-call on my birthday...woot. :S

This little doctor is growing up

I only have a couple more days of Emergency Medicine, and I'm sadder about it than I would have expected. The ppl in the ED have let me do quite a bit of independent patient work and I'm growing to love the feeling of being able to do things on my own. My Sub-I is coming up next week, and I actually think it will be ok. In fact, I'm actually EXCITED.

Goodbye Doc

I realized I hadn't written anything about Doc Farber after he passed. (http://media.www.volanteonline.com/media/storage/paper468/news/2007/03/28/DocFarber/Remembering.William.doc.Farber-2809226.shtml) I think this article actually does a fairly good job. Quite simply, he was a great student advocate and not always in the most obvious ways. Since this is a fairly public page, I won't go into specifics, but I suspect, even now, he did a lot for me that I'll never know about. He was also just a sweet man. And, while my flight schedule didn't allow me to go to his funeral, I trust he knows that I appreciated everything he did for me and for the school. Thanks Doc.
